Online car manual/how to read car's computer?

I have a '97 Volkswagen Cabrio cnovertable and I need to find where to plug in the thing to read the car's computer. I went to Autozone and they couldn't find where to plug it in, lol. Can someone please either tell me where to plug it in or can you tell me where I can find a free online car manual for my car? Thanks, but do you happen to know WHERE the port is?

1. you have to go to the VW dealer, or find a shop that has a Snap-on M.O.D.I.S. For some reason the port for the reader has 2 prongs that wont allow a normal OBD2 reader to plug in. And NEVER, i irepeat NEVER take your car to Autozone to get the code read. The code readers they use give "generic" codes meaning they dont really specifically diagnose the problem but what picked up the problem first. Trust me the $70 you spend at the dealer to get it read will be worth it in the long run. Do you really think that a guy making $8.00/hour can properley diagnose your car?
2. Underneath the radio on the console is a couple of caps next to the ashtray. One of them comes off and the diagnosis plug is under. It's been a while since I did it (since I work in Parts).
