  1. you can just put it straight to the battery obviosly with cables and put a fuse halfway inbetween incase of a surge...the batt is only 12v so wont do any harm
  2. It will work fine, but I would recommend using a 12 volt motorcycle battery (if you don't need it for anything else). It will be lighter.
  3. No risk -- the fishfinder is designed to run off that battery. You can use 20- or 18-gauge wire and add alligator clips or small clamps on the end, put an inline fuse holder on the positive lead within 6 inches of the battery post and use a one-amp fuse. If the fishfinder is the only thing on the circuit, the fuse will still protect you from a fire if, for example, insulation gets rubbed off the wires and creates a direct short, the wires will heat up and melt the insulation -- I've seen it happen, and it's more likely on a metal boat. If that's all you need power for, you could get away with a lighter battery, just make sure it's 12 volts -- most FF's will work with voltages between 10 & 15.
  4. On the positive wire throw in an inline fuse to protect the fishfinder. To make it easy have circular marine connections on each end of the positive and negative wires from the finder. This will allow a quick and clean connection to the battery.
  5. Direct is fine if use good cables and fuses as already suggested. This link is good. http://easyacdc.com/ Do not ever use a part of your boat as an earth. Do not ever allow any wiring to contact your boat or water, use good well insulated wiring, good waterproof connectors, glued heat shrink for all joints and you will be fine. Good luck.
  6. Yes. If your fish finder operates on 12v, you should be able to connect it to a 12v battery without issues. It is advised to put a fuse in the circuit between the +ve battery post and the fish finder connection. 5A should be plenty for this.
