Is my gas range instrument accurate in my car?

I just bought my first car since 1994 (Scion xB 2008). The owners manual says it has a 14 gal tank. I let my gas range finder get down to 1 mile left. When I filled the tank, it only held 12 gals. Are any of these accurate or is it just for fun?

1. the 14 gallon tank includes a 2 gallon reserve that does not register on the fuel guage
2. All gas gauges are not accurate, the reason for that is because there is no law and no true reason why is has to be very accurate. This gauge only shows approximate gas left in the tank, after owning the car long enough and though some experimentation on your part yo can get the feel of the gauge and be able to really tell when you are out of gas.
3. then you are lucky you was walking..... if you want to know how far you can drive on a tank then set the mileage and drive til it stops running dont make much sinces but you will know how far and how much it will hold for sure
