My second hand car has rust underneath is there anything I can do to remove it ?
Brought a second hand nissan path finder 1999. I was inspecting the underneath and it seems its got its fair share of rusting that is happening underneath. Around the tire bushings and other areas viz a viz muffler etc. Is there something I can do without spending a lot of money to remove the rust and mitigate its bad effects. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

- Removing rust is not easy. Typically you have to replace the rusted parts to completely cure the problem. You can slow down the spread of the rust by painting certain paintable surfaces. Take a wire brush to the rust first and get as much off as possible before painting. Also, spraying on some WD-40, or other lubricating agent (especially to the non-paintable surfaces) will also prevent more spreading. However, you will have to reapply the lubricant fairly often.
- Very difficult to remove rust, having it blasted with abrasive's such as sand is about the only way, there are acid based liquids which will retard it, probably the best thing and cheap, is to brush on old engine oil on and around the areas, box sections can be injected with a wax based liquid to help stop rust turning to rot
- Just undercoat the areas once a year and you will be fine.
- KBS Coatings.
