my car is blowing black smoke any ideas?

my car (vauxhall vertra 1997 diesel) blows out black smoke but only when im driving and i put my foot on the accellater, i also have a engine light come on which i took the the car to the garge they put the fault finder on the car they said the mass air flow senser had gone so i replaced that but still the same problem, i have the AA out but they cannt find any problems

1st, without proper diagnostics you cannot get a proper repair. 2nd, by the sound of it you are burning oil and it might be sending mixed signals to your computer. 3rd, take it to a certified diesel repair shop or to the dealer that has a good diesel tech. Good luck and hope this helps
sounds like bad fuel injectors or dirty ones
A diesel with a MAF sensor, must be commonrail injection, Get the dealer to check the fuel pressure is high enough and maybe clean the injectors. The only other problem could be the computer allowing the injectors to stay open too long, Either way it has to go back to the dealer as cracking open the fuel rail on a commonrail diesel car is dangerous without the correct equiptment to depressurise the fuel system, Here in Australia we have already recorded one death since the introduction of commonrail diesel. Don't allow anyone inexperienced to mess with your car, as seriously they could end up dead!!!!!
check for a clogged air filter.(at the intake manifold.) replace it. and that will be all. since the moment You have put "the mass air flow sensor "and today ....several months has been pass. it is about the time for a tune up.
Symptoms of black smoke in a diesel engine usually relate to 1. Excess fuel being delivered to the combustion chamber. 2. Fuel timing 3. Obstructed air filter 4. Low engine RPM & heavy acceleration, again an excess amount of fuel delivery. 5. Low compression Older diesel powered vehicles use a pre timed, mechanical injector pump, whereas the late model vehicles are a drive by wire(rheostat) & computer timed. Try shifting the transmission to a lower gear upon acceleration. If symptoms persist, have a technician perform a compression test. _ _ _
