Car Titles

Is it safe to let someone put a car titles in your name?

Is it safe to let someone put a car title in your name when they have a pretty big record of screwing up and getting in trouble, what kind of trouble can I get in if they get caught doing something illegal with the car while its in my name and I don't have a drivers licenses, but they do.

  1. Probably not because if they get in a wreck & kill some one or something bad happnes the other party can come after you & sue you.
  2. It is highly dangerous.
  3. Do not allow anyone to do this. It's fraud, and it could get you and the other person in some very hot water with the law.
  4. This would be extremely dangerous for you, as the title holder (the legal owner) you would bear the full legal responsibility for any accidents the vehicle was involved in. (Even with full insurance) This could wipe you out financially, in an event that you have no assets your future earning could be in jeopardy. You know the track record of the person so the likelihood of something happening is high. DO NOT DO THIS !!!
  5. If there's even the slightest chance that this person is involved in something illegal, steer clear. Police find it parked in front of your house with a big bag o' cocaine, guess who gets charged? Yup, it's you. Apart from potential liability to yourself, as a friend you have a responsibility to discourage illegal activity, but by doing them this favor you become an "enabler." Find another, better, way to support their rehabilitation.
  6. I guess that would depend on your definition of "safe". It's in your name, so it's your car. Red light ticket comes to you, at your address. You have to pay it. Car gets impounded, guess who has to go get it out, and pay for it? If the 'driver' fails to keep mandatory insurance on the vehicle, guess who get their license pulled for not having insurance? Yep, the owner. And when they have a wreck, and take out a 08 Buick, and send grandma to the hospital, guess who gets the bill for that? Yes, again, the owner. What next? You open a bank account and give them access to that too?
